Risk Management

MYSA has mandated that all Adult Participants involved with Youth Soccer (Coaches, Managers, Parent Helpers, Referees, Board members, etc.) complete Background checks, Concussion & SafeSport training prior to participating with a team.  All training is provided free of charge and online.

Details of each are listed below.  At the end of the Concussion & SafeSport training ensure you are saving your certificate as a downloadable file so that the certificate can be uploaded to Sports Affinity as a record of compliance.

Details on how to upload a document can be found below.

Background Checks

Required: Yearly

Approximate time to complete: 5 minutes

The Minnesota Youth Soccer Association requires that all adult participants complete an annual background check. All member club officials, coaches, team managers and administrators who are at least 18 years old must meet the background check requirements before they can participate in any MYSA-related activities.

As of October 2016, background checks are initiated through the Affinity Sports Registration platform, though they are still processed by the McDowell Agency. This process will allow returning participants to easily renew their background checks, and will allow new participants to complete a background check and create an account in the registration platform at the same time.

Click on the link below to begin your background check, and use the reference guide if you have questions. Technical questions regarding the process or account information may be directed to the Affinity Sports helpline at 855-703-2578.

    • Approximate time to complete: 2-3 hours
  • Required: SafeSport Yearly Refresher [not needed if you completed SafeSport Training Certification in given year]
    • Approximate time to complete: 20 minutes

Federal Law and MYSA Policy now require that all adult participants complete SafeSport training every two years.  Use the link below to create an account within the SafeSport site using the information below to complete this training requirement.

All completed SafeSport certificates and yearly refresher certificates need to be emailed to the HEAT Risk Coordinator, Brian Spiewak
(bespiewak@msn.com) every year.  This step is a check and balance for the HEAT that SafeSport training training has been completed by responsible parties.

Minnesota Concussion Law & MYSA Concussion Policy

Minnesota has joined a growing number of states that have passed laws on providing concussion information, training and procedures to be followed for youth athletes to return to play.  A copy of the MN statute and also the MYSA Concussion Policy the MYSA Board of Directors adopted at its July 9th, 2011 meeting are provided below.

This law became effective as of September 1, 2011. The Minnesota legislation requires any municipality, business, school district or nonprofit organization that organizes a youth athletic activity and charges a fee to follow the statute's requirements.

The statute applies to all practices and games.

All Heat Coaches (Head & Assistant) and Team Managers must take the CDC training and abide by the requirements. There is a certificate to print out to show completion of the course at the end. Print it out or save it as a file as proof of completion.

Also, please note that this statute affects all sports, not just soccer.

Affinity Sports Document Upload Steps

Upon completion of each training, you will receive a certificate of completion that must be uploaded into your Affinity account for your club to validate. Save each certificate as a PDF directly from the training portals. Login to your Sports Affinity account (use the Background Check link, above) and go to your "Certificates" tab. Click on the appropriate box to upload your file, click "choose file", choose the appropriate file to upload, click on the green “Upload Image” button. The pop-up box will close and your certificate will replace the generic upload certificate picture that was previously in the box.
